Scaling & Root Planing (Deep Cleaning) Post-Operative Instructions 

Do NOT eat anything after scaling and root planing until the anesthesia wears off, as you might bite your lips, cheek, or tongue and cause damage. You may have some discomfort when the anesthesia wears off; take your non-aspirin pain medication(s) as directed, whether it is prescribed or over-the-counter. 

Medications After Deep Cleaning 

  • Please take 600 mg of ibuprofen (equivalent to 3 tablets of over-the-counter Ibuprofen or Advil) every 4-6 hours for the next 3-5 days. 
  • Please take it as instructed, whether the area hurts or not. 
  • Do NOT exceed 2400 mg (12 tabs) in 24 hours!!! 

AND/OR (You may alternate Ibuprofen and Tylenol pain medications for better pain coverage) 

An antibiotic may have been prescribed to prevent or minimize infection. Please take the antibiotics as instructed until all tablets / pills are finished.

What mouthwash should I use after root planing? 

Dr. Seibert often recommends using an antimicrobial or prescription mouthwash, such as chlorhexidine, for a short period after your cleaning. This helps keep bacteria under control while your gums heal. Avoid alcohol-based mouthwashes unless advised otherwise. 

Do I need antibiotics after root planing? 

 Most patients do not need antibiotics after root planing. Dr. Seibert may prescribe them if there’s a significant infection, swelling, or if you have certain medical conditions that increase the risk of infection. Follow your prescribed dosage if you are given antibiotics. 

Managing Discomfort After Root Planing 

Slight swelling of the operated area is not unusual. Chapped lips or bruising of the lips/cheek area may occur. 

  • A reusable ice bag or a frozen vegetable bag, wrapped in a soft towel, can be applied to the surgical area to help minimize facial swelling. Alternating 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off will usually be adequate during the first 24-48 hours after the procedure. 

Is it normal for teeth to hurt after deep cleaning? 

 You may experience some tooth sensitivity after the procedure, particularly to cold temperatures. Sensitivity usually decreases within several weeks after surgery. It can be minimized by keeping the area as plaque-free as possible. If the sensitivity is extreme, contact our office for recommendations or medications to relieve the discomfort. 

How long does sensitivity last after root planing? 

Sensitivity usually improves within a few weeks. Using a toothpaste for sensitive teeth and avoiding very hot, cold, or sugary foods can help ease discomfort during this time.  

Bleeding and Gum Healing After Scaling 

Minor bleeding, such as a pinkish tinge to your saliva, may occur during the first 48 hours following surgery. Avoid extremely hot foods for the rest of the day and do not rinse out your mouth, as this can often prolong the bleeding. If bleeding continues, apply light pressure to the area with a moistened gauze or a moistened tea bag. Keep in place for 20-30 minutes without looking to see if the bleeding has stopped. If bleeding increases or occurs past the initial 48 hours, please call our office as soon as possible to notify the doctor and receive further instructions. 

How long does it take for gums to heal after scaling and root planing? 

Gums typically start feeling better within a few days and continue to heal over several weeks. The healing time can vary depending on the severity of the gum disease before treatment. 

Why do my gums feel tight after scaling and root planing? 

As swelling goes down and the gums begin to reattach to the tooth surface, it’s normal for them to feel tighter. This is a sign that healing is progressing. 

Eating and Diet After Root Planing 

You may eat as tolerated after the numbness has worn off. Be sure to maintain a balanced diet and drink plenty of fluids. We’ve included suggestions below for what you can and cannot eat in the days and weeks following deep cleaning of your teeth. 

What can I eat after deep cleaning my teeth? 

 Soft, mild foods are best for the first day or two. Soups, yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies, and scrambled eggs are gentle options that won’t irritate your gums. 

What not to eat after deep cleaning? 

Avoid crunchy, spicy, or acidic foods right after your procedure. Chips, nuts, citrus, and hot sauces can irritate or delay the healing process. It’s also best to skip alcohol and extremely hot drinks for a few days. 

Are there foods that help gums heal faster? 

 Yes. Foods rich in vitamin C, such as berries, oranges, and leafy greens, support gum healing. Protein-rich foods, such as eggs, fish, and beans, also help your body repair tissue. 

Smoking is not advised during the 7-14 days following the procedure, as smoking will delay your healing.  

Home Care and Oral Hygiene After Scaling & Root Planing 

 Rinse your mouth with a lukewarm saltwater rinse 4-6 times per day, swishing for 30 seconds with each use, including after eating or snacking. Saltwater rinse can be made by dissolving one tablespoon of salt in an 8-oz glass of water.  

Start home care as instructed. Do not be concerned if you experience mild bleeding during brushing for a few days after the scaling and root planing procedure. 

What toothpaste is best after root planing? 

 A gentle, fluoride toothpaste made for sensitive teeth works well after treatment. It helps reduce discomfort and supports the strength of the enamel as the gums heal. 

When can I brush my teeth after scaling and root planing? 

You can brush gently the same day or the next morning, depending on comfort. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle pressure around the treated areas. Floss carefully once tenderness improves.
